New York

The Law:

Felons in prison or on parole cannot vote. Once an individual has completed his or her sentence, the right to vote is automatically restored. Individuals on probation may vote. In response to two surveys conducted in 2003 and 2005 that revealed that election officials were unclear about voting eligibility and laws regarding ex-felons, the New York State board of Elections distributed a memorandum to all county officials. The memo outlined the law, including the eligibility of people on probation and the prohibition of demands that potential voters produce criminal records.
